There has been a considerable amount of innovation in this industry, yet restraint technology has lagged in the area of truly advanced technological design. This is not unusual in that if an officer feels comfortable with the tools that he has necessary to maintain his safety and survival, then his continued training and his good judgment will be his best ally.
Even though the shackle type restraint has been in existence for many centuries, it has proved invaluable to law enforcement in its present form since its inception. The ZipCuff, which is easily deployed from the BDU side pocket or from its leather or webbing holster, is not meant to replace the present handcuff but to augment its use in different situations in the field. There are many instances where an officer would prefer to restrain a prisoner without having to holster his/her weapon. Also greater control of a prisoner is maintained through the proper use of the ZipCuff.
The device is manufactured in two models, one is of metal construction, and the other is made of composite materials. Much care has been taken in the design and engineering of this product to ensure ease of use, and dependability in the field. The evolutionary development of this product has answered many questions during the project regarding scenarios in which it can be used.
While it might be considered a secondary cuffing device, it is still the only truly one-hand deployable restraint device on the market that will totally restrain a prisoner from first point of contact, to full lock-down restraint, in under two seconds.
The double-locking capability required for restraint devices of this type is ergonomically designed into the ZipCuff and engineered to be accomplished also with one hand. When the Zipcuff is applied, and the handle is pulled, the body of the ZipCuff slides down to surround both wrists at once. This will allow immediate double-locking of the ZipCuff with greater and timelier control of the prisoner.
Careful analysis of the application forces involved in the deployment of the ZipCuff, have led to a design which will not allow the ZipCuff to pull to tight on the first pull. While great care is taken when restraining any prisoner, with this humane application, the securely restrained prisoner is less likely to be belligerent.
